Probably the most challenging part of this costume was figuring out the horsehair petticoat. The year 1854 was when skirts were at their fullest before the mass availability of hoop skirts, so I essentially had to find a way to make a skirt as full as a small hoop but using only petticoats. This look is made possible by a corded petticoat, a horsehair petticoat, and a ruffled petticoat, over which sits a tiered skirt of blue and black iridescent silk taffeta. I made both day and evening bodices to go with the skirt.
